We’ve been fiending to get back to DC ever since our first Wine Riot there in 2011, and the capital city did not disappoint! Our Second Glass crew had a hell of a time returning this past weekend for an all-day Saturday of Rioting. We got a bunch of recent press including local publication the Washingtonian making a covergirl out of our amazing DJ Andie, and were stocked with a stand-out batch of DC’s finest volunteers. You guys freaking rule! Thanks to Washington for an amazing second stop on our 2012 tour.

To toast the completion of a Sold Out Boston Wine Riot, team Second Glass hit up Eastern Standard for the after party! In tow was a record breaking 9L bottle of Veuve Cliquot, reaffirming our work-hard party-hard ethos.

Img_1403

Nothing says “home” like Eastern Standard, our absolute favorite place in Boston. The food and staff there simply can not be beat! The celebratory Sunday consisted of champagne and decadent brunch food followed by a delicious bounty of seafood. This year we partied with the "Salmanazar" (the giant nine-liter champagne’s official moniker) which was promptly drunk, signed by the team, and is currently immortalized on the ES trophy display shelf.

Cheers to our long time friend John Hafferty for helping us hunt down the bottle of bubbly! John is the owner at Bin Ends and you've probably seen him ringlead a crash course or two in past Riots, make sure to check out his store for cool wine finds.

Thanks, Boston, for an amazing weekend as always. You always know how to make it a perfect homecoming, and we already can’t wait to return!

Fri, 13 Apr 2012 15:05:00 -0700 The New Look of Wine Riot http://blog.secondglass.com/the-new-look-of-wine-riot http://blog.secondglass.com/the-new-look-of-wine-riot

Second Glass has been throwing Wine Riot with the classic look and same iconic imagery for a number of years. This time around we wanted to revitalize the entire event and take it to a new level for 2012. Drum roll, please....

Screen_shot_2012-04-13_at_3
First and foremost we give you our glorious new Wine Riot website. Imagery, colors, copy, fonts, you name it -- they’re all redone, and we’re effing pumped. Our genius Designer Holly Gordon applied her masterful design touches to even the farthest reaches of the website.

Newsignage

And just wait till you see the fabulous new ‘do of Wine Riot itself. Think Anthropology meets Etsy smothered in wine sauce. We upgraded every nook and cranny of the place, from the crisp new winery signs to photobooth props to the visuals that line the walls. We've got a ton of new elements too, which you're sure to pick out the moment you walk through the door.

Fresh from the drawing board is a concept we're especially pumped about. Our new interactive booths were conceived with you, our thirsty and curious winos, forefront on our minds. Banners with regional maps and varietal breakdowns help seal the deal on your understanding, coupled with the wineries themselves preaching the good word. For all you visual learners out there, this is your bread and butter. Both Loire Valley and Bordeaux will be breaking down their regions’ wines for Boston, and make sure to stop by Quady Winery to learn about vermouth and their wine cocktails.

It’s been a long process, but this change is the perfect renaissance to reflect the Second Glass spirit and mission. To our long-devoted team of faithful Wine Rioters and newcomers alike, we know you’ll love the changes we’ve made and we’re thrilled to share them with you!

Fri, 06 Apr 2012 13:26:00 -0700 Party with a Water Witch http://blog.secondglass.com/party-with-a-water-witch http://blog.secondglass.com/party-with-a-water-witch

The Mondavi family has long been a household name when it comes to winemaking, but Marc Mondavi has a bit of a twist on his normal job description: he’s also a water witch.

Screen_shot_2012-04-06_at_1

No, we’re not caught up in our own Harry Potter delusions, Marc has been a practicing water witch for over 40 years. He uses traditional divining rods in a “dowsing” process to seek out water beneath the earth’s surface. These rods channel energy and draw him to water like a moth to a flame. Sure it’s strange and unexplainable, but in case you have any reservations about drinking water from a witch, remember that the Mondavis have been kicking ass in the wine industry for over four generations. You know they’re doing something right.

To celebrate this supernatural twist in their family’s history, Marc and his daughters are throwing a series of parties around the US! The Divining Rod launch parties are slotted for:

Boston: April 26th

DC: May 17th

Chicago: June 14th

Come join wine family royalty as they uncork their first bottles of Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay. Ten bucks gets you delicious, supernatural vino and muchies, plus all proceeds go to benefit charity: water. The Divining Rod will also be on tour with us for Wine Riot 2012, so grab a glass and come party with the water witch!

Mon, 26 Mar 2012 17:33:00 -0700 Friday Night Sweets at Wine Riot Boston http://blog.secondglass.com/friday-night-sweets-at-wine-riot-boston http://blog.secondglass.com/friday-night-sweets-at-wine-riot-boston

Satisfy your sweet tooth at Wine Riot Boston on Opening Night! We've got some champion sweets making guest appearances for one night only. The decadent duo is Cow & Crumb, who bring Wine Riot to “a new level of cookie bliss”, and longtime friends Taza Chocolate, whose chocolates are so good we’re not even sure they’re street legal.

Screen_shot_2012-03-26_at_5

Cookie maven Hilary Koloski is the one-woman-show behind Cow & Crumb based out of Boston, MA. The company has been steadily growing since last year, and her delectable morsels have been making the rounds: From wine tastings at Bauer Wines and The Urban Grape to continued involvement with Artists for Humanity and Future Chefs. Swirl a glass of red with the Chocolate Monster and Spice Girl, or a couple glasses of white as you scarf down the CC L'Orange and Sugar Sugar.

Screen_shot_2012-03-26_at_5

We’re also stoked to welcome back Somerville celebs Taza Chocolate. Taza has  been on board with Wine Riot for ages now (we even used to have neighboring offices!) and these seasoned pros bring basically their entire portfolio of chocolate for the snarfing. Tote a glass of your favorite red while you nibble on the mesmerizing stone-ground deliciousness.

Screen_shot_2012-03-26_at_5

We’re pumped for a truly epic Opening Night in Boston, and the combined sugary superpowers of Taza Chocolate and Cow & Crumb put the icing on the cake. Follow the trail of crumbs at @cowandcrumb and spread the love, and be sure to stay in touch with Taza on Twitter and Facebook for all things chocolate.

The Second Glass crew journeyed up to Sonoma for the VinOlivo Grand Tasting this past Friday, where our mobile app helped attendees navigate the deliciousness!  We’re talking 60 wineries and 25 of the top restaurants from the area.

The crowd rated their favorites and Gloria Ferrer’s VA de VI and Ty Caton’s 2009 Titanium came out on top. All the wines went down easily paired with the array of finger foods, especially the homemade cheese or life-changing strudel from the Strudel Guy.  Those eager to up the ante could grab a Limoncello or a manhattan from HelloCello.

At just a quick 45 minute drive from our beloved San Francisco, you can expect us back in Sonoma again soon and often! For a full list of Friday’s wines, click here.

We here at Second Glass are huge wine enthusiasts and always eager to learn more, so in the spirit of wine education we’ve expanded our weekly Friday meeting (previously focused on company projects and metrics) to include an informal wine presentation given by one member of our team. It’s an awesome way to research a favorite place or grape and share those stories, plus getting together to drink delicious wine at 5 p.m. is a hell of a way to kick off the weekend.

Img_2233

So far we’ve had Morgan break down Austrian wine and pour Riesling, Blaufrankish, Zweigelt, and Gruner Veltliner (her personal favorite). Tyler brought in three differently aged wines and showed how they changed drastically over the years. Our tech team Avery and Karl killed it with a succinct explanation and demonstration of malolactic fermentation, a ubiquitous wine making process that is often overlooked. This past Friday our culinary goddess Jenn kicked it up a notch and with chart-topping homemade cupcakes: her flagship chocolate cake recipe with blackberry frosting, and a mimosa cupcake with butter cream and lemon.

Friday_mtg_cupcakes

Overall we’ve been learning a ton about wine and having a lot of fun doing it (which may or may not be the entire point of our company). We think it’s the perfect way for companies to cheers to the accomplishments of a long work week, whether you’ve brought along cupcakes or not!

Fri, 07 Oct 2011 18:35:52 -0700 Wine Riot takes on Brooklyn, NY http://blog.secondglass.com/wine-riot-takes-on-brooklyn-ny http://blog.secondglass.com/wine-riot-takes-on-brooklyn-ny We <3 NY! Second Glass' Wine Riot hit Brooklyn on September 22-23 for its 4th stop on the national tour. Attendees braved apocalyptic events to get to the Riot, including torrential rains, subway delays and cancellations, floods, fires, plagues, and the traffic-halting presence of basically the entire UN council and Obama (who unfortunately had previous obligations, otherwise would have totally gone to Wine Riot).
Media_httpblogsecondg_nbkbr
The party went down at Skylight One Hanson, an old bank with vaulted ceilings, awesome ironwork, marble details, and oh, a massive safe with three-foot-thick walls of solid steel (putting every bank heist movie we've ever seen into perspective.) Attendees totally rocked it on the mobile app and made close to 5,900 reviews! Overall almost half of people at Wine Riot used the app to rate and remember their favorite wines. Droid users were especially ecstatic to see the debut of the mobile app for Android, hot off the press from our talented tech team. With the app we tracked which wines were the most popular based on highest reviews and most liked by the majority of the crowd. Check out each city's top wines here. Rioters took over 1,000 pictures in the photo booth, covered their bods with more than 350 sheets of tattoos, and killed over 1,200 bottles of wine in a single weekend. We had crash courses led by Cameron Hughes, Esporao, Quady, Charles Krug, Dr. Loosen and Olé Imports. There also may or may not have been dancing by the Heredad Lounge... Other highlights involve local celebrity sightings of the Professional Wingman and his protégé for the night, and the dazzling presence of Spanish winemaker Gloria Collell who was holding it down in the Heredad Lounge. There rioters took a tour of Spain, tasted their way through five Iberian wine regions and sent over 250 postcards, including 20 overseas to Spain, Italy, Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand and Australia, and of course countless home to mom. Next up on the Wine Riot tour: Washington DC! We are headed there October 21-22 at the DAR Constitution Hall. We will be taking over the jumbotron with real-time displays of reviews made on the app as well as the list of top wines on the big screen. DC’s vibrant wine culture and massive crew of Millennials will be a great atmosphere for Wine Riot. To stay up to date, be sure to check out our city specific Facebook and Twitter accounts. Washington DC @SecondGlass and follow #WineRiot for more real time updates about DC! Facebook We also have several plans in the works to make our mobile app bigger and badder than ever, so look forward to some awesome new changes when DC rolls around!

It's that competitive edge that the spartans at United Social Sports in Washington DC are all about.

Media_httpblogsecondg_gabcm

That's why we're super excited to be teaming up with the crew at USS for this year's Wine Riot! Just as we had awesome success partnering with Social Boston Sports in Boston, these glorious athletes are perfect candidates to come riot victoriously and drink more wine. To reward to the winners of each weekly tournament for their valiant efforts on the battlefield, we're giving the entire squad tickets to Wine Riot DC! We can't wait to see that competitive edge channeled towards drinking wine (a challenge that, we anticipate, will be wholeheartedly accepted). USS brings together friends and groups to compete in a wide range of sports and activities. From skeeball to scavenger hunts, U.S.S. takes care of all the organizing, so all you have to do is show up and rage! They still have spots left in the leagues to play skeeball, bocce ball, corn hole, shuffleboard and of course, beer pong. Registration closes TOMORROW Friday the 30th, so make sure to get in there!

Thu, 15 Sep 2011 23:00:46 -0700 A Weekend of Epic Proportions http://blog.secondglass.com/a-weekend-of-epic-proportions http://blog.secondglass.com/a-weekend-of-epic-proportions September is a month when you're makin' moves and takin’ names. You ditch the swim trunks in favor of fall gear and adopt a back-to-school, nose-to-the-grindstone, kick-ass work ethic. Not to mention ascend to the ranks of Spartan athletes, primed and ready for weekends of Olympian proportions. It’s what you’ve been training for all summer long, right?

Your ultimate wine, beer and food triathlon kicks off Friday, September 23rd at Wine Riot New York Opening Night, where you sip and swirl your way to VIP status. Reap the glory of free Taza Chocolate and head to the lounge where you can travel the region of Spain without leaving New York, and even send postcards to your family and friends!

Next day, soak up some culture with NYC’s free-museum Saturdays. Hundreds of museums across the country are participating in this mind-expanding adventure, sponsored by the Smithsonian. You can do a second round of Wine Riot at Riot 2, or switch it up and do wine in the morning, museum at night. You might as well make your entire Saturday a crowning achievement with more wine, tattoos and photographic evidence of your epic triumph.

But your weekend barely stops there. Since you’re a pro, wake up Sunday morning and take on Brooklyn Beefsteak. We’re talking heaps of Grade A meat grilled to perfection, washed down with bottomless pints McSorleys ale. Come prepared to get your hands dirty: you won’t find a utensil in the place. To those Olympians who successfully conquer all three days: consider yourself an unofficial member of the Second Glass Bad-Ass Hall of Fame. Your next high-five's on us.

We created Wine Riot for a place for people to come, have fun and learn more about wine. But over the years we’ve started to notice wine tasting is not only about wine but it’s a great place to casually get to know someone. Turns out, meeting people at wine tasting is a thing. By the end of the night, numbers are being exchanged, the photo booth is bursting at the seams and people are pairing off left and right. For Wine Riot NYC, we’re bringin out the big guns so you can capitalize on this feeding frenzy.
So we built the environment, but now it’s time to bring in the big guns. We’ve partnered up with The Professional Wingman for Wine Riot NYC! The Professional Wingman helps men and women have better dating and social lives by giving them tips and tricks on how to make a connection. Have you seen the movie Hitch? Yeah, that’s where we are going with this...you can win personal coaching from The Wingman himself, Thomas Edwards Jr., at Wine Riot! He will coach you every step of the way and give you tips on everything from how to approach someone to your follow-up game after Wine Riot. All you have to do is sign-up below and tell us why you want help with courting that certain someone or just meeting cool people in New York. The winner will be chosen and announced in two weeks and gets free tickets to Wine Riot and of course, The Professional Wingman by your side the whole night!

Media_httpblogsecondg_cepjt
Paso Robles is one of the sweetest wine regions in central California.  Not only is it home to some out-of-this-world Zins, it’s even conveniently located just about midway between LA and San Francisco.  Really, it’s a required day trip for any wine lover. But with almost 200 wineries spanning both sides of Route 101, where do you begin?

Here are five must-visit wineries in Paso that you simply can not miss:

  1. Clayhouse Wines – This first stop right smack in the middle of downtown Paso is a great place to warm up your taste buds. You get a superb selection of wines from casual red, white and rose blends, to the tasting-room-only Estate bottles.

Pro tip: You can hit up some of the neighboring downtown tasting rooms before lunch.

  2. Hope Family Wines – Want to get more tasting for your buck?  Hope Family Wines is home to not one but FIVE wine labels that are ready for sipping all under one roof.  Get a taste of how Paso does everything from Cabernet to Zinfandel.  Their wines have been featured in tons of publications ranging from the LA Times to Playboy Magazine.

Pro tip: These wineries are in visiting order for easy navigation in a straight line

  3. Windward Vineyard – Right next door to Hope Family is Windward, where these guys are Pinot Noir pros. Want to learn a thing or two about wine? Take their tour and learn a ton by sampling a boat load of Pinot Noirs and really pick out all those little subtleties.

Pro tip: Challenge your unsuspecting friends to a bocce ball game while you drink here!

  4. Lone Madrone – This winery is all about local-sourced and sustainable wine growing with a super casual, down to earth vibe. If you ask nicely, you might even be treated to an impromptu library or barrel tasting for those special occasions or “why not?” occasions.  After tasting, check out the local artwork that lines the walls.

Pro tip: Head next door to Kenneth Volk with your Lone Madrone glass for 50% off their tasting fee

  5. Cypher Winery – You need to stop by Cypher Winery for some EPICLY awesome wines with such traditional names as “Anarchy”, “Heretic”, and the tasting-room-only “ZinBitch”. The winemakers at Cypher are some of the coolest people you’ll ever meet. Susan hosts a killer chocolate and wine paring tour in the tasting room, and Christian Tietje is all about making killer wines from killer vines.
